Inspiring Filum Terminale Sectioning Story

I wrote this back in February 2023 and wanted to highlight and share Jordan’s story. Today was the most special and memorable lunches, I finally met face to face with one of my chiari and filum disease sisters who completed her Filum Terminale sectioning surgery at the Barcelona chiari clinic a little under 6 months ago! Jordan (who is from British Columbia) and I met on a Chiari forum when her and her parents were desperately looking for treatment information. At the time, i was a few months post op from the filum treatment and shared my story of their minimally invasive and highly effective treatment that gets to the root cause, an overly intense ligament that requires sectioning to get rid of the chiari symptoms. Jordan and I bonded right away as we both had some very similar over stimulation symptoms from our inability to be inside stores and shops (the light, noise and visual patterns was too much for our brains) along with  being constantly lightheaded. When it became apparent that their Canadian neurosurgeon was dismissive of Jordan’s symptoms and not getting the help she needed, we set up a call and I shared my experiences, the filum treatment and how my post op recovery improvement milestones were. It’s been one of the greatest rewards seeing people get the help that they desperately needed and to get their lives back as the treatment has done for me! Jordan had her surgery last summer and has since been able to take trips again, socialize with friends for long periods of time, walk throughout the city and be inside shops with all the bright lights, noise, patterns and stimuli!! It still blows our minds that this simple surgery isn’t being researched and preformed here!! I’m just ecstatic to see Jordan doing so well and continuing to improve!! The silver lining in all of this is finding this amazing group of chiarians who all support one another. Although each person’s experience might be slightly different, what we’ve gone through has intensified our bonds and made each of us even more empathetic to health conditions faced by others. Thank you Jordan for the beautiful lunch and look forward to next time!! Super thankful to the clinic for getting our lives back!!

Update! I’m happy to report that Jordan is living and thriving both in a full time corporate position and enjoying other extra circulars like dancing and socializing, something that would have been impossible prior to the filum sectioning.
