Founder Emily Chabot
I wanted to bring awareness to a wonderful Foundation that has been initiated by one of the past filum patients from the Institute of Chiari in Barcelona. Emily Chabot is the Founder of Unbound Path. She has lifelong experience with the challenges that come with Filum Disease and can personally speak to the Extradural Filum Terminale Release surgery performed at Institut Chiari & Siringomielia & Escoliosis de Barcelona that was pivotal in changing her health trajectory. Unbound Path was founded to raise funds for individuals requiring an extradural filum release surgery and to bring awareness to Filum Disease and its many comorbidities. Emily personally lives with Filum Disease that had gone undiagnosed and misdiagnosed for decades. It was the experts at the Chiari Institut of Barcelona who ultimately diagnosed her and performed SFT surgery in November of 2022. One year post op, after allowing time for her body to heal and after many of her symptoms went into remission, she could not understand why none of her local doctors had ever suggested this as the root cause of her severe illness, and felt passionate about bringing awareness to the surgery that catapulted her health trajectory in a positive direction. It was, and still is, surprising to her that this diagnosis and treatment option is not spoken of more outside of Barcelona. After posting a small portion of her story on a facebook group, she spent many hours answering personal messages about her experiences and surgical outcome. As the interest grew, she felt a website that could serve as a source of information containing a centralized database of resources, her story, and other patient testimonials would be helpful to others on a similar journey. Also, the site would provide a way to receive donations for anyone who wanted to directly contribute to the mission. With all that in mind, Unbound Path was born. The non profit organization became effective on May 1, 2024 and was launched to the public on Giving Tuesday, November 2024. For more information and to donate here is the link to her Foundation
